Why do men cheat?

I'm not asking that questions to say that only men cheat. We all know that some women cheat too. Nor am I saying that all men cheat. I'm simply asking the question because a friend of mine couldn't seem to understand why a man that really loved his wife/ girlfriend could cheat on her.

It happens. I told her that all men don't do that, though. There are some guys that really make the right decisions when it comes to being faithful and good. I have been both unfaithful and faithful in certain relationships. As a matter of fact, I was the cause of the end of the best relationship I've ever been a part of due to me being unfaithful. I will always regret the decisions I made in that situation.

Back to what I was trying to explain to my friend. I was telling her that it's a deeper problem than simply a man cheating on a female he cares about. Most of the time the girlfriend or wife has nothing to do with a man cheating. Most of the time a man simply does it to get something different or new. Don't get me wrong. Some men really want to be with someone else. That's why they may cheat. But a lot of guys simply make the wrong decision when faced with the option of smashing something new and fine. It's a tough thing for some men, seriously. I once had a friend tell me that he couldn't be totally faithful until women stopped finding him attractive. I've always thought that comment was funny.

To really defend my guys I usually go back to the way a lot of us guys were raised, and some of the things we were told by our family members, friends and others when we told them about really falling for a girlfriend or whatever. I always used to hear, "Boy you're too young. You have your whole life ahead of you. Boy, you better not think you're in love because you'll see so many other fine girls when you go to college.You're too young to think about marriage. "

Those are simply some of the things I heard. Most of us guys were taught to always enjoy what we're doing, but keep our eyes open for something better. Maybe that's also why some guys have problems committing. We always think something better may be out there.

The other MJ still trying to buy team, draft well

Michael Jordan is still interested in buying the Charlotte Bobcats. That's a good thing because the squad is for sale.

I found out that MJ is even putting a team together to help him own the squad he's had partial ownership of for a few years now. Jordan presently has minority stake in the Bobcats and runs basketball operation.

Jordan talked to me and several other members of the media on Thursday night (June 25th). That was the first time several of us had heard from MJ since Bob Johnson announced the sell of the team last month.

I still wasn't able to find out if Jordan is close to securing the money needed to make the purchase. Bob put up $300 million for the squad. Forbes Magazine valued the team at $284 million, less than Johnson's expansion fee.

But MJ made it perfectly clear that he now wants majority ownership. Stay turned.

Why draft Duke's Gerald Henderson?

MJ didn't talk much about his ownership aspirations, though. He was spent most of the time defending the selection of Gerald Henderson of Duke with the 12th pick in the NBA draft. I wasn't satisfied with his reasons. Nor, did I understand why he thought Henderson, a guy with very little upside, could help the team take another step forward.

The Bobcats finished with their best regular season record last season (35-47).

Is the King of Pop going to make it?

According to a CNN report, entertainer Michael Jackson was taken to a hospital on Thursday (June 25).

A Los Angeles fire official told CNN that paramedics arrived at Michael Jackson's home after a 911 call.

Fire Capt. Steve Ruda told CNN a 911 call came in from a west Los Angeles residence at 12:21 p.m. and the patient was treated and transferred to the UCLA Medical Center.
Asked specifics of the patient's condition, the spokesman said he could not discuss them because of federal privacy laws.

I don't know what exactly to think about that. I do know that it saddends me to read/ hear that another legend from the black community might leave us. We've lost so many of our legends already. MJ was/ is simply a star you expect to live through anything. I mean, he's seemingly has more lives than faces. We've also seen him survive so many other tragedies like his battles with the law, horrible rumors, bad marriage and other drama.

I am seriously saddened by the news. And, I'm hoping for the best even though I continue to hear that things aren't looking good for Jackson.

I think I'm going to throw on some old MJ right now.

IT'S TIME FOR 2009 NBA DRAFT

I like the NBA Draft.

This is always an exciting time for me because I usually enjoy watching where my boys (the guys I covered at Wake Forest while working at a newspaper) end up. This was my final year covering Wake Forest athletics a North Carolina newspaper. So, it kind of turned into a turning point for me and the NBA draft.

I’m watching to see where former Wake Forest stars Jeff Teague and James Johnson will land this year. Experts and sources are telling me that they will go anywhere between pick number 10 and 17 in the first round. I have the duo being drafted at 13 and 14, respectively. Teague will more than likely be picked by the Pacers (he’s from Indiana), while Johnson will be snagged by Phoenix on the following pick.

Here’s my complete list of first round picks for June 25th NBA Draft.

1. The L.A. Clippers will select Oklahoma's Blake Griffin with the first pick. That's a given at this point.

2. Connecticut's Hasheem Thabeet will go to Memphis with the second pick.

3. Oklahoma City will select Davidson's Stephen Curry with the third pick if they are smart.

4. Ricky Rubio, the 18-year old from Spain will go to Sacramento with the fourth pick.

5. Memphis' Tyreke Evans should be selected by Minnesota at pick number five.
6. James Harden, F/G, Arizona State will also go to Minnesota.

7. Golden State Warriors: Jordan Hill (Arizona)
8. New York Knicks: Jonny Flynn (Da Cuse/ Syracuse)

9. Toronto Raptors: DeMar DeRozan (USC)

I don’t agree with this pick. He’s another Gerald Wallace. But many sources say that Williams and Gerald Henderson worked out well. But Williams got a guarantee that he is at the top of Larry Brown’s board.

Talking with Dallas Maverick star Josh Howard

People that followed my interviews back when I was the sports editor of a newspaper in North Carolina could tell you that I did a Q&A with Dallas Maverick star guard Josh Howard every summer.

It's almost like a tradition. This summer was no different. A lot of you probably don't remember that my first ever Q&A for The Chronicle was with J-Ho. We did an interview during his senior year at Wake Forest. The uncut version of that interview was something else. I'm not going to go into details about it.

He and I talked about that funny interview a couple years ago, though. The truth of the matter is J-Ho and I have great conversations every time we talk.

He simply gives you something that you want to hear. He's honest. Howard's funny, and he keeps it real with you every time he opens his mouth. I'm going to go ahead and let you know that he and I didn't talk too much about the radio interview with Michael Irvin that caused so much controversy last summer.

I told him that I didn't want to go there on paper. But we touched on a number of other things, though. Number Five and I talked about his camp, his love for old school cars, his new coach and next season.

J-Ho and I also talked about whether or not he planned on getting into a serious relationship anytime soon. There were a number of other topics he and I touched on during a very fun interview earlier this week. Take a look at some of the things I was able to get out of Josh while his youth league basketball camp was taking place in Winston-Salem, NC (late June).

Anthony: Josh, what's going on?

Josh: (Smiles) Nothing much. You all right.

Anthony: I can't complain, man. It's great to see you. And, this camp (Josh puts on a summer camp for Winston-Salem youth every summer. The camp takes place at his old community recreation center) is something else. I thought I'd say that real quick.

Josh: It's just a blessing. We've had a great turnout. I guess I am making everyone eat their words. First, I'm giving praises to God for giving me the ability to go out there and play ball so that I can do things like this. I've got the right team around me. Guys like yourself help me out a lot. And, I'm just staying positive.

Anthony: No doubt. I've got to ask you this, Josh. How were you able to maintain when all of the bad press hit you during the playoffs last year, and people seemingly started to crucify you?

Josh: It took me to the point to where it made me want to work harder. It let me see that a lot of people form an opinion about things they don't even know about without asking the person that said it. It's sad that the world is like that. I flipped it around and turned it into a positive. That's my motivation now. I'm going to keep using it.

Anthony: How did you take watching guys like Skip Bayless and others talk about you?

Josh: I just wish they would contact the person they're talking about before they go out and make their assumptions. That's what I think would be fair. Instead of just going out there and blasting a person. And, they'll give another person credit when they don't deserve it. Find out what's really going on. I don't really pay that much attention to it.

Anthony: I feel that. Um, do you want to be seen as a guy that's purely about his community?

Josh: Definitely. That's the way I've been from the jump. I had a chance to play with the Olympic team. But I turned that down. That would be a big dream for anybody else to go out there and win a gold for the United States. For me, growing up in Morningside and walking to Reynolds Park, I didn't have a male role model besides my step dad and my older cousin. I feel like if I'm around these young men and young women I can show them that there's a positive guy that's going to give them a chance — no matter what. Hopefully they can see they can do whatever they want to do as long as they stay positive.

Anthony: (Smiles.) A lot of people want to know what your personal life is like. Have you settled down with anyone?

Josh: (Laughs.) Nah. I mean, I'm slowing down. But no girlfriend. I'm living life. I'm trying to get stuff set, so that when I do decide to settle down she won't have to worry. Nor, will the kids have to worry.

Anthony: How does a guy like yourself, or any professional athlete determine whether a female is keeping it real, or simply wants you for what you have?

Josh: (Both laugh.) Number one will be prayer. Number two you have to trust in your gut feeling, and the people that's around you. Just watch people. I'm a big watcher. I don't say much, but I'll watch you all day. You can read a lot of people off that.

Anthony: Let's talk a little basketball.

Josh: (Laughs.) OK.

Anthony: The season ended on a bad note for you all. You all were bounced by Denver.

Josh: Right.

Anthony: How ready is Josh Howard for next season?

Josh: I've been working out. You know I just had ankle surgery, though. So I took more time off. But I'm excited. That's the only word I can really say to describe how I feel about the future. It's a new opportunity with our second year coach. And, we get another full season with Jason Kidd. With him being a future Hall of Famer you have to like our chances.

Anthony: But I know you were close to Devin (Harris). So, were you really feeling that trade a couple years ago? We're still talking about that trade.

Josh: I see. (Both laugh.) I understood the business of it, though. As a friend, that was my guy. Him, Marquis and Diop.

Anthony: No doubt. I was just on the website looking at the banner and it had you, Dirk and Jason Kidd. You were first, though.

Josh: (Smiles.) Yeah. I've been there for six years now. Check my track record. I've done so many positive things. And that's one of the things that I've always hung my had on. I've never been a negative person.

Anthony: OK. I saw you on "MTV Cribs." (Smiles.) You were bragging about that Kool-Aid. Is it really like that?

Josh: (Laughs.) That Kool-Aid is great. My mom can vouch for that. My little brother too. I'm the only one in the house that could make the Kool-Aid growing up. I wasn't playing about that. And, I wasn't playing about anyone challenging me in pool.

Anthony: I think T.B. (a mutual friend of ours) might try to challenge you.

Josh: (Smiles.) I know he'll play me. He's probably the only one that will play me. He's a good challenge.

Anthony: No doubt. If you could trade places with anybody who would it be?

Josh: I'm still on Hugh Hefner. I told you that in college. I want to be my age, though.

Anthony: I know you're cool with a lot of entertainers and rappers. You have rap star Jadakiss coming through later this week. How do you come in contact with guys like that?

Josh: I don't even know where I was at. We just bumped into each other somewhere. I'm real close with one of his guys, Top Cat. I hang out with him. It's great to have them be a part of this.

Anthony: OK. What have you been bumping lately?

Josh: Of course, Lil' Wayne — the hottest rapper alive.

Anthony: No doubt. And, shout out to Big John.

Josh: (Laughs.) Shout out to Big John all day. My boy is in the video stunting. We have people from Winston that are doing things around the world. I'm proud to be from here.

Anthony: Who would you like to play one-on-one?

Josh: Earl "The Pearl" Monroe.

Relationship questions

I figured I would post another serious blog real quick after talking with a good friend of mine recently. I posted a series of blogs about relationships (long distance, being single, dating several people and other) on my last page. As you can see, I usually post my fun interviews on this page. So, I figured I would write a lil something serious for the new page.

First, let me start off by saying I am not single. But I remember always being asked why I was still single more times than I would like to talk about. Did I really have an answer for that? Not really. I usually just saif that I simply haven't met the right one yet. I'm pretty picky (not unreasonable) too. I used to date a number of different types of people, but I would only get serious with a female that was my type. I have met quite a few great females. The best one I ever met was back in college. I'll always remember, TA. That's what I call her.

Anyway. It seems like when I met someone that I really liked it happened while I was out of town. And, I am just not into long distance relationships. And, I have yet to meet a female that's secure enough to trust me after a significant amount of time away from me. They may start reading too much into myspace messages, or the fact that I live a busy life... and I know quite a few people. It's all about being secure, though.

Then again, I don't really like the idea of having to make reservations to see or be with someone that I like. I like being able to call her at 10, 11,12 and saying, "I want to see you now." And, her be ready to come over and invite me over. I know that looks like booty call time, but I was just trying to make a point. I like availability. And, long distance relationships always seem cool at first because you're always happy to see each other, simply because you haven't been around each other in a week or so. Some people like that arrangement, as I've found out. Not me.Anyway.

A friend of mine recently got back with her ex, stating that she didn't enjoy the dating scene, and that she was willing to try to work things back out with her ex due to that fact. She KNEW what she was getting with him. No mystery. Is that settling? Or, do you really realize that your ex was the best thing for you after being without him or her for a while? And, how do you know it will work the second time around?I'd be lying if I didn't admit to wondering how my life would be if I were still with my EX (TA)... I mean, we were quite a couple for a minute. And, I still care about her. But she's happily married now. Even if she weren't married. How would she take the fact that I have been with other people? And, would that trust ever be there again? Ah, there's that word, TRUST. Then again, why not just go forward and go hard after someone new? Who knows? Oh yeah. I must remember that I am in a relationship right now. LOL.

I'm just thinking through this blog, ya know. I guess I am finished....'Preciate you reading.

Steve Smith shares thoughts

Carolina Panther wide receiver Steve Smith always seems to be misunderstood and under appreciated. People that don’t know him think that he’s got a quick temper, while those that do know him understand his passion for the game. He also doesn’t get as much credit as he should for the way he plays on the field.
There’s a lot more to Steve than his ability on the field, though. He’s a genuinely good person. He serves as a mentor and friend to the boys of the Carolina Panthers Courage House. He visits often to play basketball, video games and assist with homework. He also buys all the guys at the Courage House season tickets every year. That’s only a sample of what Steve is all about.
I wanted to see what he was up to this week, and also find out a few other things. He seems happy, but he’s not satisfied. Take a look at what one of my favorite football players and I talked recently.

Anthony: What’s going on, Steve?
Steve: Nothing much.
Anthony: As you know, I thought you did your thing this past season. But I’m sure you wanted to advance further. Give me your thoughts on the past football season.
Steve: Oh yeah, it was real nice. Our hard work has paid off. We accomplished some of the goals that we set at the beginning of the year. But, we still wanted to end the season with a championship. And, we didn’t have any momentum going into the playoffs. Arizona played a great game, though. They had a great run.
Anthony: No doubt. What was going through your mind as Jake (Delhome) was seemingly throwing that playoff game away? I mean, he did throw five interceptions. (Giggles.)
Steve: Yeah, that was tough. But I knew that we had to maintain our focus, and not really dwell on the negatives. We tried to look at the positive things. We knew we needed to make the plays on each series. We didn’t quite do that. But Jake was definitely having a tough time. No doubt.

Anthony: So, at no point, did you start to think to yourself, ‘Ah man, get him out of there.’
Steve: Uh, no. He’s my teammate. Sometimes things happen. There guys were making plays.
Anthony: (Laughs.) Did you check out any Utah games this year? (Steve’s college team). I saw you at the bowl game.

Steve: Yeah. I saw them when I could on television. It’s almost like I’m scouting, though. You’re looking at guys that you’re potentially playing at any moment. So, it’s hard to just enjoy a game. I find myself watching techniques and things like that. (Laughs.) I feel like I’m at work again. So, I try to stay away from that.

Anthony: What type of things do you like to do when you’re not running routes, catching balls or doing something related to football?
Steve: You know, play video games, interact with my children, barbecuing and things like that.
Anthony: Oh yeah?
Steve: Yeah.
Anthony: What kind of games do you like to play?
Steve: I’m into the snow boarding games.
Anthony: You like snow boarding?
Steve: (Laughs.) Yeah.
Anthony: OK. How often do you get back to California? (Steve’s home state.)
Steve: I go every May. (Both laugh.) I make sure I go when it’s sunshine over there.
Anthony: (Smiles.) How does a California guy end up going to college in Utah?
Steve: I didn’t want to go somewhere too far from home. But, I wanted a free trip to somewhere different. I always told myself that I wanted to go somewhere for free, that I wouldn’t ever visit. I liked the atmosphere. And, I was from California and had never seen snow. (Both laugh.) There were a lot of things that I liked about the school. Plus, they pass the ball a lot, so that helped me.

Anthony: No doubt. How are you enjoying Charlotte?
Steve: It’s great. (Laughs.) I actually live in South Carolina. South Carolina is even better.
Anthony: When I watch you on the field, I’m always impressed by your ability. I am still wondering why your name isn’t mentioned as one of the top receivers in the league. Do you think that you get enough respect?
Steve: Probably not. But, respect is actually in the eye of the beholder. You don’t have to respect me, but corners know that when they line up against me it’s going to be a tough game. Just because nobody says a lot about me doesn’t mean that players don’t respect me. Teams run a different coverage from what we watched in their previous games.
Anthony: OK. Is there a lot of trash talking that goes on during football games?

Steve: Yeah, sometimes. I did a lot of trash talking my first couple of years, but now I don’t. It exerts too much energy. I may say something to a guy to see where his head is.
Anthony: Uh huh.

Steve: A lot of times a guy is talking to me, and I just ignore him. (Both laugh.) And, that kind of irritates him. He can’t get me out of my game.
Anthony: Which defensive back would you say has played you the tightest?
Steve: I would have to say, “Champ.” Champ Bailey. Even though we beat them last year, he held me to like three or four catches. So, he did a really good job.
Anthony: Now, you started out as one of the premier kick return guys in the league, now you’ve elevated your game as a receiver. Where are you in your career?
Steve: I’m kind of where I would like to be in my career. I am enjoying playing, enjoying life. I’ve got my goals. I want to be a consistent pro bowl receiver and a hall of famer. But only time will tell.

Anthony: If you could play any other position, what would it be?
Steve: Honestly?

Anthony: (Smiles.) Yeah.
Steve: Punter or long snapper.
Anthony: (Laughs.) Come on now. Why?
Steve: They have long careers and don’t do anything. (Both laugh.) They don’t do anything at practice. We played ....Arizona.... last year, and their long snapper had been in the league for 19 years.
Anthony: Wow.
Steve: Yeah. I like to be getting that check for 19 years. What he makes in three checks, I probably make in eight or nine checks.
Anthony: What’s your favorite TV show?
Steve: “Law and Order.”

Anthony: That’s my show too, dawg. But, I like the one that comes on Sundays.
Steve: Yeah, that’s the one that I like to watch. I don’t watch Sunday night football. (Both laugh.)
Anthony: What’s your relationship like with coach (John) Fox?

Steve: (Laughs.) Uh, I’d say day to day.
Anthony: (Laughs.) Let’s conclude with free association.

Wake's Jeff Teague talks

Wake's talented sophomore guard Jeff Teague instantly became one of my favorite ballers after I watched him get down on teams during his freshman campaign in 2008.

He's got a very good game. And, he's the first Wake guard to really impress me since my main man Chris Paul. I like how well Jeff plays inside and out. I like how smooth he plays. I especially like how confident he looks while he's on the court. J-Teague definitely has that swagger I love in athletes.I caught up with Teague to get his thoughts on a number of things during the week of the NCAA tourney.

He and I also talked about what Wake would have to do to be a better squad next season. His Deacs got bounced in the first round by Cleveland State this year. I also asked him if he were going to return next season. He declared for the 2009 NBA Draft a couple weeks after wek talked. Take a look at some of the other things we talked about during a cool conversation.

Anthony: What's going on, Jeff?

Jeff: Nothing, really. Just been chilling. Getting ready to head to Indy for the Easter break. It's going to be good to see family and friends I haven't seen in a while.

Anthony: Let's talk a little basketball for a minute.

Jeff: All right.

Anthony: Characterize this past season for me.

Jeff: I mean, we did pretty good. We were ranked number one for a minute. We beat some good teams. We did some good things. We definitely finished better than a lot of people predicted. It was kind of disappointing to not advance in the Dance. But Cleveland State wanted it more than we did that night.

Anthony: That's an understatment. What happen to you all that night? Nevermind. (Both laugh.) I don't even want to go there. I talked to someone that played against you in high school. And, he said that you drive to the cup more now. Do you penetrate more than you did in high school?

Jeff: Uh, I penetrated a lot in high school. But I also shot a lot of threes because it was easier to get my shot off. I guess you can say I'm a better penetrater now.

Anthony: (Smiles.) Who are you picking to win it all?

Jeff: UNC.

Anthony: No doubt. What are you usually doing when you're not balling, bruh?

Jeff: Probably in the locker room playing video games with James (Johnson) and Gary. I love fighting games.

Anthony: Do you have a favorite show you like to watch?

Jeff: I still watch old re-runs of the Jamie Foxx Show during the late night. I might check out the Ray J show a little too.

Anthony: What was the last CD you bought or copied?

Jeff: Probably some Lil' Wayne CD.

Anthony: If you could play one-on-one with anyone who would it be?

Jeff: Probably LeBron. He's one of my favorite players to watch. I probably wouldn't win. He's beat me 11-3 or something like that. But it would be fun to play him.

Anthony: OK. Who wins between you and CP (Chris Paul)?

Jeff: It depends on how many dribbles we get because CP can shake you up a little bit. If we only get three dribbles then I think I could get him. We've played a little game called one-on-one-on-one. I won a couple. He won most of them. (Both laugh.)

Anthony: Let me ask you this. What is this team going to have to improve upon before next season?

Jeff: Probably defense. We stepped up on the defensive end a little this year. But next season should be better. We have some great players coming in, and coming back. We just need to step it up and get more wins on the road.

Anthony: Are you coming back next year?

Jeff: (Smiles.) Yes. I think I'll be back next year. I'm pretty sure I'll play my junior year. Anthony: If you could trade places with anyone who would it be?
